The bronze Flame by Egon Weiner was initially installed at the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, a gift by Building Construction Magazine in recognition of the fair’s architectural and engineering achievements.
It sits atop a granite pedestal surrounded by beautiful Rhododendron shrubs.
What is the large tree that towers over it?
Location: Seattle Center, Exhibition Hall Lawn
The Century 21 Exposition (also known as the Seattle World’s Fair) was held April 21, 1962, to October 21, 1962, in Seattle. Nearly 10 million people attended the fair during its six-month run.
With the Space Race against the Soviet Union underway and Boeing establishing Seattle as an aerospace city, the fair’s major themes were space 🚀, science 🔭, and the future 🤖, showcasing a technologically optimistic vision.
The exposition left behind numerous public buildings. The fair saw the construction of the Space Needle and Alweg Monorail , as well as several sports venues (Washington State Coliseum, now Climate Pledge Arena 🏒), performing arts buildings (the Playhouse, now the Cornish Playhouse ), and the United States Science Pavilion, now the Pacific Science Center .
Unlike some other world’s fairs of its era, Century 21 made a profit.
The site, slightly expanded since the fair, is now called Seattle Center.
