Five weeks after the release of Nevermind in 1991, when the band took the album on tour, Nirvana was still largely unknown outside the Pacific Northwest. Despite its capacity of 2,800 people, the Paramount Theatre in Seattle was the tour’s largest venue. That changed quickly after the Paramount show. A year later, Nirvana performed at the Seattle Center Coliseum before 18,000 people.
On what holiday did Nirvana perform at the Paramount Theatre?
The Paramount Theatre was built by Hollywood-based Paramount Pictures as a grand movie palace and opened in 1928. Initially, it was used for showing films and vaudeville performances.
On April 10, 1985, Madonna kicked off her first tour, the Virgin Tour, here.
On October 31, 1991, Nirvana played what is now called Live at the Paramount. Tickets to the show were $10. Throughout their 70-minute set, Nirvana played 19 high-energy songs. This Halloween performance at the Paramount Theatre captured Nirvana right as they were catapulting to national fame. Just two months later, Nevermind ousted Michael Jackson’s Dangerous album from the number one spot on the Billboard chart. The concert was eventually released as a live concert film in 2011.
