Red Panda: Raccoon’s Trickster Cousin

Red Panda: Raccoon’s Trickster Cousin

Red pandas were called pandas long before the giant panda was discovered by the West. They earned the name because of their eating habits.

Did you know that red pandas aren’t closely related to giant pandas? They belong to their own unique family, Ailuridae, and are actually closer to raccoons and skunks.

Tree Climbers

Red pandas are excellent climbers and spend much of their time in trees. Their ankles can rotate 180 degrees, helping them climb down headfirst. Their long, bushy tail helps with balance while climbing and also serves as a blanket in cold weather.

Due to their low-energy diet of bamboo, red pandas have a slow metabolism, which means they sleep up to 16 hours a day.

Red pandas are solitary animals, and they prefer to live alone. They mark their territory with scent glands near their tail.
