Aldabra tortoises are famous for their longevity. They can live well over 100 years, and some have lived over 150 years in captivity, making them one of the longest-living land animals.

Aldabra tortoises are so strong that they can flip themselves back over if they fall on their backs!
Did you know that Aldabra tortoises can weigh up to 550 pounds (250 kg), about as much as a full-sized grand piano? Their large size not only helps protect them from predators but also means they can store water and food in their bodies, helping them survive in tough conditions.
Island Champions
They are true giants, growing up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) in length! Their enormous, dome-shaped shells make them one of the largest tortoise species in the world, second only to the Galápagos tortoise. Males are typically much larger than females.
Ancient Survivors
Aldabra tortoises are one of the few remaining species of “giant tortoises” that once roamed many islands. Over time, most giant tortoises went extinct, but the Aldabra tortoise has survived and continues to thrive on its remote atoll in the Seychelles, making it a living link to a distant past.

Friendly Giants
Despite their massive size, Aldabra tortoises are known for being docile and good-tempered. In the wild and in captivity, they’re often curious about humans and enjoy gentle interactions. They’re known to approach slowly for a scratch or to stretch their necks when they feel relaxed. Their gentle nature makes them beloved by zookeepers and visitors alike!
